Sample Letter to New Jersey State General Assembly Member
|
NAME Dear Assemblyman/Assemblywoman: As a proud police officer and a member of the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police, I am respectfully asking that you please oppose SCR1, S2, S3 and S4 and any General Assembly companion legislation that may be introduced. These bills significantly alter and reduce pensions and benefits for New Jersey police officers. The fact that the State Legislature is considering these changes has alarmed working police officers. Many veteran officers that had no intention to retire immediately have begun preparing to retire now to avoid the impact these bills, and S3 in particular, will have on their retirement benefits. Each day I report to work to protect our neighborhoods and keep our streets safe from crime, I place my life in jeopardy. That’s part of the job, and I accept it. But it just doesn’t seem fair that after years of service that my pension and benefits are to be unilaterally cut by the state. While these cuts will certainly have an impact on my family, the unilateral approach by the Governor and State Senate is demoralizing to professional police officers throughout New Jersey. I hope you will stand with the police officers like me and actively oppose, and vote against, SCR1, S2, S3, and S4 and any companion legislation that may be introduced in the General Assembly. Sincerely,
